The Larter & Sons corporation originated from the company Larter, Elcox & Co. Which was founded in 1865. Larter, Elcox & Co. Had an office location in New York City on Maiden Lane and a factory located on Parkhurst Street in Newark N. The business developed enormously under the management of Frederick H. Larter, who in 1905 bought out all interests in the firm and formed a partnership with his sons, then changing the company’s name to Larter & Sons. In the early thirties, sales manager George A. Bought a majority interest in the company. Under the continued leadership of George Schuetz, the company continued to grow throughout the next few decades. The son of George Schuetz, Sr. A graduate of Brown University with an MBA from Rutgers University, came into the business in the early 60’s after a 20 year career in the U. Bought out all other interests in Larter & Sons in the early 1970’s and directed the company until he officially retired from the firm in January 1998. A third generation of Schutz’s became involved with the company when Stephen G. Schutz joined the firm after graduating with an accounting degree from Villanova University. During his first year with the company, Stephen became a graduate gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America and a certified gemologist with the American Gem Society. In 1986, Stephen moved the factory from its original location in Newark, N. To a new custom built facility in Laurence Harbor, N. To allow for a more efficient operation. He modernized the operation with the addition of computer driven equipment such as CNC milling machines and lathes. Stephen also went to great lengths to vertically integrate the firm and become independent from as many vendors as possible. This included the addition of a foundry that alloys and fabricates all of the fine gold and platinum used in Larter & Sons jewelry. This, along with many other in-house processes, allows Larter to be in full control of its manufacturing processes enabling the company to deliver the finest quality product in a very timely manner at the very best price. The culture of Larter & Sons is that of quality craftsmanship, design and selection within a classical yet contemporary framework. It’s 19th century roots were in men’s jewelry and rings for both women and men. The 20th century saw the addition of a full line of fine women’s jewelry, especially in the areas of rings, pins, earrings, pendants, and enameled jewelry. The largest and most successful addition to the Larter product line was wedding bands and solitaires offered in fine platinum and gold, which were introduced in the late 20th century. Larter & Sons, in its third century of business, will continue to design new product that fits within it’s high standards for quality and design. The company will always continue to offer the numerous classical items that are every bit as popular today as they were when they were originally introduced over 135 years ago.
